I could never be an atheist. I wished I could have arrived at that conclusion with absolute confidence. It would be easier on some levels. I just couldn't ignore creation, the universe, the incredible beauty of nature and life itself.  As much as I thought I hated God and the idea of him, I could never deny his existence. Mostly I just found him confusing and perhaps cruel. The reality of the ugliness and unfairness in this world proved it along with his apparent silence and inaction.
 

Even in my most hostile and messed up states I still would look at the stars, the sky, the mountains, beauty and the insane amount of detail in everything and marvel. I would think to myself, there has to be something, this all could not just happen by accident, there has to be a Creator. Nothing can make only one thing and that is nothing. The notion it was some cosmic accident without purpose was absurdity to me.  There is obvious order. It was too perfect.
 

Pulse speaks of these things. I started writing it over 20 years ago , a completely different person and a completely different song. I rewrote and finished it two years ago. The only remaining piece of the song first started is the line, “drawing closer to thee” (I wrote that at the time thinking it sounded kind of spiritual). 

I placed this song  at this point on the album and in the story even though I  was still  far away and lost. The words in the song seem to imply  I have had a spiritual awakening and had settled what I believe. By the time this song was finished  that was true.But in the stories order I was still a long way off .  I place Pulse here because I would have these moments, breaks in the chaos, brief glimpses of clarity.  In these moments I could see and understand the truth:  “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth"  (just not quite in those words yet) .
