This is the first song on this album and in this story. Musically, I wanted it to have a childlike feel. I tried to  write Lions through that lens. Some of the  lyrics  may sound metaphoric but most are literal. 

The worst time for me  was night time, bed time; it was when my thoughts bullied me and my imagination ran wild with guilt and fear. Guilt, that God would get me for all my mistakes and fear, that I would die in my sleep and wake up in hell.. Did I ask for forgiveness for all my sins that day?  Every shadow and sound was a murderer or a demon. I would sleep on top of my blankets for fear of something hiding under them. Snakes, spiders, monsters; I would barely sleep. Relief for me was found only in the safety of the morning light.

Lying in wait for me to sleep
I keep my eyes wide open
Danger is all around me

If only I was a little stronger

there's snakes under my blankets 
scorpions between the sheets
I smooth out all the wrinkles
Now they can't surprise me

Murder calls out from my closet
With cotton candy sugar treats
Don’t be afraid I won’t eat you
My teeth are sharp but my lips are sweet

Out side these four walls I won’t wander
when its dark I keep my lanterns lit
I know your out there waiting
When morning comes I can breath again 

storms are always brewing
lightning tries to strike me
thunder pound its fist in anger
its working if your trying to scare me 

there's sharks in these waters
I can't see them in the deep
I hear them in there darkness
In there darkness gnashing their teeth
